Thursday 21 August (performance at 7pm, 2 course supper (£15) from 8.30pm) In Praise of Woman - British Women Composers. Two extraordinary performers, one sensational evening! The celebrated soprano Judith Gardner Jones (right) has sung in roles as diverse as Martha in Faust, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Lucy Lockett in Britten’s Beggar’s Opera, Pamina in The Magic Flute, and the diva Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera. She is accompanied by award winning pianist Claire Haslin, who has captivated audiences in, amongst other places, London’s Purcell Room and Italy’s Montalcino Festival, as well as Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall. Together they perform work by such composers as Liza Lehman, Rebecca Clarke, and Elisabeth Lutyens.

Friday 29 August (8pm, (preceded by one course supper (£10) served from 7pm) Alex Reedijk, Director General, Scottish Opera. Founded by Sir Alexander Gibson in 1962, Scottish Opera was plunged into crisis in 2005 when the money ran out and it was controversially closed down for a season - at which point Alexander Reedijk took over as DG. Since then, the recovery has brought with it some heartening new developments, like the Five;15 series of commissioned mini-operas by contemporary writers and composers. Alex Reedijk recalls some roller-coaster moments.

EXHIBITIONS
Notes from Jim Dunbar

Art Convenor’s Report

Our invited RSA artist, Ronnie Forbes gave us a strong selection of inspired work, beautifully presented. This quality exhibition was planned to coincide with our established, high profile Reception and Buffet to celebrate the opening of the Annual Exhibition of the Royal Scottish Academy.
We look forward with anticipation to our next show ‘Home Ground’, a wide selection of drawings and paintings by artist members Laura Gressani and Emma Gray. The PV is on Wed. 28th May 6 - 8pm with a second viewing, organised by the artists themselves, on Sat. 31st May 2 - 5pm.  The subsequent exhibition features artist members of the Glasgow Art Club. Encouraging links and exchanges such as this has to be beneficial not only to the artists but also to the promotion of both Clubs. The PV is on Wed 25th June 6 - 8pm.
A reminder to all artists that your next ‘Professional Members Summer Show’ is not that far away! Get your brushes going and let us put on a lively, exciting show again. We will follow last year’s format - handing-in work on the morning of Monday 21st July with hanging beginning prompt at 12:00. If this arrangement does not suit, deliver your work, clearly marked with titles, prices and ‘D’ rings, on Fri 18th or Sat 19th July, for storage ‘til Monday. For any other arrangements please contact Jim Dunbar. The PV is on Wed 23rd July 6 - 8pm. (Collection of unsold work will be morning of Mon 18th Aug.)
Finally, our very own Molly Marcellino and her highly artistic family are to be showcased in ‘Three Generations’. This fascinating exhibition will surely attract great interest. The PV is on Wed 20th August 6-8pm and runs until Sat 13th Sept.
Advance notice to all lay members, please note that your exhibition will be hung on the following Monday 15th September. (Further details in next issue) jim dunbar

LIFE DRAWING/PORTRAIT
A group meets every Tuesday in the club's studio from 6.30-8.30 pm and on Thursday mornings

sir timSir Timothyothy portrayed.....
Tuesday evening’s life/portrait group was honoured to have the recently retired Sir Timothy Clifford before them in the studio’s plush red seat. This interpretation is by Lindsay Brydon. Sir Timothy so liked Lindsay’s work that he purchased it to hang alongside a John Bellany in his private collection. Needless to say, Lindsay was ‘chuffed’. Other recent ‘subjects’ have included Edinburgh’s Lord (lady) Provost. Also appearing before the group has been the Lady Dorrian in all her finery. The Tuesday group meets 6.30-8.30pm in the studo. The Club also has a Thursday morning life drawing group. Further details from the office or just turn up. All welcome!
